IMPORTANT TIPS & HINTS FOR COLD WEATHER IN ITHACA

The weather forecast for this weekend is predicting extremely cold temperatures and wind chills.

Please be aware that we continually monitor the temperatures in all buildings, but you should take the following precautions:

  • Make sure your windows are tightly closed.
  • Keep your mini-blinds closed to help retain heat in your room.
  • Make sure your bed or furniture is not pushed up against or blocking any heaters. Heat needs space to circulate in your room.
  • Stay indoors, stay hydrated, and wear layers. You need to have your socks on and long sleeve shirts, even indoors.
  • Use space heaters safely. You are permitted to use your own personal space heater in your apartment, however you must choose a space heater with automatic tip-over shut-off, and a recognized safety certification like UL Approved. Place space heaters 3 feet from furniture and always plug directly into an outlet- never use an extension cord for a space heater.

Popular types are Oil-filled Radiators, Ceramic heaters, and Bladeless Towers.

Here is a list of recommended space heaters from the NYTimes/Wirecutter.

Here are some additional tips from the National Weather Service
